Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Community development is an essential process through which communities improve their social, economic, and environmental conditions. Sabon Gari Local Government Area (LGA) in Kaduna State, like many other parts of Nigeria, has seen significant changes due to the rise of digital media platforms. These platforms, including social media, blogs, and mobile apps, have emerged as critical tools for promoting community development initiatives. According to researchers like Ahmed et al. (2023), digital media plays a vital role in mobilizing resources, fostering local participation, and facilitating information dissemination that promotes various aspects of community development, including health, education, and infrastructure. This study investigates how digital media is utilized as a tool for community development in Sabon Gari, exploring the different ways it supports local growth, empowerment, and social change.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Sabon Gari, despite efforts to improve the community's economic and social conditions, there are barriers to effective development such as limited access to resources, lack of awareness, and poor communication channels. Digital media, while present, is not always leveraged effectively to address these challenges. The study aims to explore the role of digital media in promoting community development by analyzing the potential it holds in raising awareness, facilitating collaboration, and enabling more inclusive development initiatives. By identifying how digital media can overcome barriers to community development, this study will highlight strategies for better engagement with local populations.
